For English 1101, we are doing a debate. We are arguing zoos. More specifically we are are arguing what zoos have become. Zoos say that they educate and preserve. Well, I want to know what this picture really teaches us. Does it teach us about the habitat and the life of the animal? Or does it teach us that humans are supreme and rule? You may view this as extreme, but if this is what zoos want to say they are open for, then they should actually stick to that. Below is the thesis statement of my debate.
I’m sure that almost all of us have gone to a zoo. Whether it was with school for a field trip to, “learn,” or with your family for entertainment. Our interest and affection for these animals can lead to the despair of the animals that we love so dearly. These facilities say that they operate for education even though these facilities are more like museums. Animals are kept in cages away from their natural habitat and their normal social or family groups. This is why we believe that zoos should be banned to keep these animals out of confinement and in their natural habitat. Zoos should be banned because they are used more for entertainment than they are for protection and education, these animals are subject to neurotic and self-destructive behavior and some animals are even sold from the zoos to laboratories, circuses, other zoos, or commercial “game” farms to be shot by hunters. |
